Wondering if you can claim your child, niece, parent—or even a roommate—as a dependent on your tax return? You’re not alone! Here’s a quick breakdown to help you figure it out before filing.
Two Types of Dependents:
Qualifying Child: They must be:
Your child, stepchild, sibling, niece/nephew, or grandchild
Under age 19 (or under 24 if a full-time student)
Lived with you over half the year
Didn’t provide over half their own support
Not filing a joint return (unless just for a refund)
Qualifying Relative: They must:
Earn under $5,050 (2024 limit)
Get more than half their support from you
Be related or live with you all year
Not be someone else’s qualifying child
⚠️ Watch out for:
Shared custody? Only one parent can claim—check if Form 8332 is needed.
Live-in partner? Must meet the income + full-year living test.
Adult child with income? They may not qualify if they support themselves.
Claiming a dependent can boost your refund—but if you claim someone who doesn’t qualify, the IRS can reject your return, delay your refund, or even assess penalties. Need help confirming if someone qualifies? Reach out at info@mkhstaxgroup.com before you e-file!
