Summer has always been a season of long days, sunshine, and (for many of us) a slower rhythm—but at MKHS Tax Group, this summer has taken on an extra bit of meaning. We’ve dedicated ourselves to giving back in a uniquely heartwarming way: by reading to shelter dogs at the Pasadena Humane Society every week. It’s become more than just an activity—it’s a cherished part of our routine and a powerful way to make a difference.

Why We Read

Reading to dogs might sound simple, but it packs a punch of compassion. Each story shared helps these sweet pups become more comfortable with human voices, eases their anxiety, and helps build the trust that boosts their chances of adoption. What started as a few days in the month rotated into a weekly tradition that we now looks forward to with genuine joy at MKHS Tax Group.

Meet the Dogs Who Stole Our Hearts

Every visit, we meet incredible dogs with their own personalities:

  • Abramo

    ree
    • Intake Date: July 15, 2025

    • Breed: Siberian Husky (white)

    • Estimated Age: 2 years

    • Status: Adopted — we couldn’t be happier!

  • Canelo

    ree
    • Intake Date: July 18, 2025

    • Looks like: German Shepherd / Pit Bull (tan)

    • Status: Adopted — another fostered friendship that found its forever home

  • Bruno

    ree
    • Intake Date: April 11, 2025

    • Breed: Cane Corso mix (black/white), about 4 years old

    • Weight: 137 lbs

    • Traits: Gentle giant—not great with cats or kids but loves quiet, calm environments; already knows “sit,” “down,” and “shake” and walks nicely on a leash. Treats (especially hot dogs) and a good scratch make his day.

  • Kona

    ree
    • Intake Date: June 25, 2025

    • Breed: Tan German Shepherd, about 3 years old

    • Traits: Sweet and sensitive, she opens up slowly. She leashes well and adores cheese—and one-on-one, calm settings where she can relax and bond. We have a special place in our heart for shy Kona. Please come to meet her.

Little Moments, Big Impact

Whether it’s the gentle quiet as we read aloud, the excitement of a new command learned, or the wag of a tail during snack time—each moment matters. It’s a reminder that giving back doesn’t always mean grand gestures. Sometimes, it’s the smaller, consistent kindnesses that leave the biggest lasting impact.

We’re thrilled to see two of our four “dogs of the week” already adopted—that warms our hearts and fuels our commitment to continue these weekly visits.

Looking Ahead…

As we head into the tail end of summer, our weekly visits are staying strong. We plan to:

  • Continue reading sessions and build longer, trust-filled relationships with even more dogs

  • Share mini-stories or photos to highlight the individual personalities we meet

  • Encourage our community—friends, clients, colleagues—to get involved, whether by visiting Pasadena Humane Society or supporting in other meaningful ways

How You Can Help

If you’d like to make a difference, here’s how:

  • Adopt or foster: Visit Pasadena Humane Society’s daily walk-in adoption hours (10 AM–5 PM)

  • Donate: Supplies, funds, or volunteer your time—every bit helps

  • Spread the word: Share stories of adoptable pets like Abramo, Canelo, Bruno, and Kona—visibility can help these wonderful animals find a home

This summer, we discovered that stories don’t just live on the page—they live in the bonds we build, one quiet moment at a time.

Thank you for being part of this journey with us!
